Queer is a word that has several meanings in the English language. Among these are "deviating from the expected or normal", "strange", "unconventional", and "homosexual". My life has been all of those and having been cursed all my life with a pathetic memory I decided I wanted to preserve what I can recall, mainly for the benefit of my grandchildren.
These are the memoirs of Ian Wilcock born 26th December 1937 in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK. They were originally started in January 2006 as a blog but this was soon abandoned after I became dissatisfied with that format. When I found wikidot.com I realised that this was a far better vehicle and the work was re-started in July 2007. The photo of me was taken in Valparaíso, Chile in January 2007.
I have given these memoirs the sub-title "Fragments from a portable life" because since the age of eighteen I have moved around a great deal and I have been frequently living out of either kit-bag, rucksac, suitcase, box or packing crate.
This will be a work in progress for many months to come. Most chapters are divided into sections and I have made a note at the top of each page to indicate which ones have content. In the Travelling Life pages I have added a few photos as an illustration. Many more photos can be see in my on-line photo album or My Picasa.
In order to give my readers a taste of what is to come I intend to put a brief summary at the head of each page then add in the detail with a longer narrative as I get around to it.
